Saturday Fun--2008

November 15
Veterans Day Symposium

Thousands of soldiers returned home from their service during World War II without something they left with: their vision. The U.S. Veterans Administration set out to devise new techniques and invent new devices to allow them to achieve the dreams they left behind to serve our country. Join us on Saturday, November 15 for a special program exploring the birth of modern rehabilitation for people with vision loss. Call 899-2365 by November 13 to register.

November 29
Family Day Open House

Friends and relatives visiting for Thanksgiving? Looking for something special to show them? Bring them to APH's Museum on Saturday, November 29 from 10 a.m, to 3 p.m. Visitors can write their names in braille, see the book of Psalms from Helen Keller's Bible, play a computer game designed for children who are blind, and enjoy other activities in this award-winning museum. See "Denver the Guide Dog," a Discovery Channel video about how a puppy becomes a dog guide and is matched with a new owner.

December 6
Holiday Card Factory

The winter holiday season can be a delight to the senses: the smell of evergreen trees, the crackle of wrapping paper, the taste of family treats, and the sounds of holiday tunes. Why should your holiday cards be any different? Join our museum staff in a tactile holiday card making workshop at the American Printing House for the Blind. Families can explore different materials that evoke the spirit of Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanza, and add a message in braille. The workshop is free to the public but space is limited. Registration is required. Saturday, December 6, from 10 a.m. to noon. Call 899-2365 by December 4 to register.

January 3
Louis Braille's 200th Birthday Celebration

Louis is turning 200 and we're celebrating with all things French! Come to the museum on Saturday, January 3 from 12:30-3 p.m. to explore the tastes, sights, and sounds of Louis Braille's Paris home. Experts on Braille's life, and the music, food, and fashion of France in the 1820s will share some of the influences that helped shape this boy genius and hero of book lovers everywhere. Registration is required. Call 899-2365 by January 2 to register.

February 21
Dits, Dahs, & Dots

Learn all about Morse Code, braille, and try a little coding yourself! "Dits and Dahs" are the sounds created by Morse Code. Dots, of course, are the dots of braille. This hands-on program takes place at APH with a visit to the nearby Thomas Edison House. Registration is required. Time is TBA. Call 899-2365 by February 19 to register.
