    Join Tristan and Millie as they describe plans to revise the long standing and well respected Program to Develop Efficient Visual Functioning, first created by Dr. Natalie Barraga in 1978. Attendees can share ideas and stories about how they use the program and how their experiences may be used to create a new program.     While the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) is crucial to the success of individuals with visual impairments, teachers of students with visual impairments struggle to find the time and resources to teach these skills. Staff at the Hatlen Center for the Blind are developing a series of lessons to make infusing these skills throughout the school, home and community easier. The concept behind this project will be shared and practical suggestions from participants will be solicited.

    For decades, the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) has published a variety of curriculums, codebooks, and supplemental materials designed to facilitate acquisition of the braille code by both consumers and professionals. While many of these products are tried and true, they have become outdated. Thus, APH is in the process of modernizing and streamlining braille materials for adventitiously blinded individuals (both children and adults), professionals, and parents who need to learn braille. As part of this process, we are seeking feedback that will allow us to redesign our products to best meet the needs of the field.

Learn about the levels of picture dependence in early trade books and teacher intervention needed to support the child's reading and understanding of the text. The Early Braille Trade Books Project provides commercially available books with braille labels and access to a web site with information about the book which supports the teacher's selection of appropriate books.

    This session will provide a basic overview of MathBuilders: A Supplemental Math Program for K-3 Braille Users. Learn about the newest unit, Data Collection, Graphing, and Probability/Statistics and view a prototype of Fractions, Mixed Numbers, and Decimals. You will also learn about the three new Geometro kits that help students learn mathematical concepts taught in Geometry. These kits reinforce math concepts taught at the elementary, middle and high school levels.
